This Jewel Box bathroom sits inside a historic Shaker Heights condo near Cleveland, Ohio, and the goal was never to make it feel small or secondary. The building itself has historical presence, and the renovation needed to match that. The result is a space that feels layered, intentional, and very much in conversation with its surroundings.

Shaker Heights is known for its early twentieth-century architecture and carefully maintained neighborhoods. While the conversation often centers on large single-family homes, the area also has a number of historically significant condo buildings that were designed with the same level of care. These are not afterthought structures. They were built with proportion, durability, and long-term living in mind.
This renovation started from that understanding. Instead of treating the bathroom as a blank slate or pushing it toward a generic modern look, the design leans into the character of the building. Everything was considered through the lens of what already existed and what would feel appropriate over time; however, major modern amenities were needed.

The green marble flooring and lower wall surround were already in place, and they set the tone for the entire room. The stone gives the space weight and depth and feels consistent with the era of the building. Rather than fighting it or lightening it up, the design builds on that foundation.
Above the marble, a detailed crane wallpaper adds movement and a sense of story. It shifts the bathroom from a purely functional space into something that feels more like a room you occupy, not just pass through, as a result, it’s fun! The contrast between the dark stone and the illustrated walls creates intimacy while still feeling elevated, which is especially effective in a condo where every square foot should feel intentional.

A classic pedestal sink reinforces the room’s traditional bones and works comfortably alongside the existing architecture. Polished brass fixtures add warmth without calling too much attention to themselves. Custom cabinetry was designed for storage and proportion, keeping the lines clean and the scale appropriate to the room. Altogether, the composition creates an elevated experience.
Brass mesh inserts bring in texture and a quiet richness. They catch the light subtly and add interest without tipping into decoration for decoration’s sake. These kinds of details are what give the space depth and longevity.

What makes this bathroom work is restraint. Nothing feels forced or overly referential. The design does not compete with the building’s history, nor does it try to disappear. It simply works with what was already there and builds on it thoughtfully.
In a city like Cleveland, where architecture carries real weight, renovations like this matter. They show that condos can be treated with the same care and seriousness as any historic home, and that good design starts with paying attention to context.
